STOP THE PERMANENT USE OF JOHN WILKES HOUSE AS A HOMELESS HOSTEL

Enfield Council plans to make John Wilkes House a permanent hostel for single homeless men

DEADLINE: 11th JANUARY 2026 – ACT NOW!

Why This Matters

John Wilkes House was initially approved as a temporary homeless hostel to house single homeless men. Enfield Council are now planning to make this homeless hostel permanent which will have lasting consequences for Ponders End and the surrounding areas.

  • Community Safety: Residents report intimidation, groups congregating, drinking, smoking, and blocked pavements
  • Impact on Schools & Children: Multiple primary, secondary, and special needs schools are located nearby – parents and staff have serious safeguarding concerns
  • Disabled & Elderly Residents: Pavement obstructions make the area difficult and unsafe to navigate – increased anxiety and reduced independence for vulnerable people
  • Local Businesses & Shoppers: Safety concerns for shoppers and negative impact on the local high street and economy
  • Street Environment & Cleanliness: Increased litter, street drinking, and anti-social behaviour – decline in the overall look and feel of the area
  • Broken Promises: The Council committed to a time-limited pilot with a review before permanence – a permanent application has been submitted without meaningful community consultation
